Sea Kayaking at the Halkidiki peninsula (Village-hopping)
Overview

This trip is ideal for those with little or no paddling experience, who are interested in learning the basics of sea kayaking, while enjoying the magnificent landscape of Halkidiki and its breathtaking coastline. The journey is designed in such a way that passes through the most picturesque sites, while enjoying the best the peninsula has to offer along the way, such as dining in ‘’tavernas’’ with delicious local sea food and resting in traditional lodges by the sea.

No previous experience is required, as the course will focus on teaching you the right paddling techniques, on demonstrating how to plan your trip safely depending on weather conditions, as well as on covering safety and rescue procedures. You can skip a day of paddling if you feel like swimming or biking.

Our trip takes place in Halkidiki, a majestic three-pronged peninsula in Northern Greece; it is a local favorite as a vacations destination, with spectacular natural beauties and home to Mount Athos, a World Heritage Site and self-governed state consisting of 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries.

The Halkidiki peninsula is a land of hidden treasures, home to a coast of 500 kilometers in length. It possesses countless world-famous beaches of superb quality, most of which have acquired the trademark ‘’blue flag’’ sign.

Day 2: Donkey Islands – Amouliani Island

Once we’ve had our traditional Greek breakfast of omelet, yogurt, raisins and honey, we will head to the coast and get acquainted with our kayaks & equipment. Our goal for the day will be to circumnavigate the beautiful “Donkey Islands”, and explore parts of the coastline of Amouliani island which lies in front of us. It will also give us the opportunity to refresh our paddling skills and perhaps look at a few rescues (total 5-6 nm).  Accommodation will be arranged at a local Inn on Amouliani Island which has great view of Mount Athos. Here we will have a traditional dinner with fresh fish, calamari and of course’ Retsina!

Day 3: Gulf of Sigitikos (Sithonia peninsula)

Day 3 we have two options, all depending on the weather forecast as well as the needs, wants and ability of group members. Provided the weather conditions are favorable, we have the option to cross the “Gulf of Sigitikos” (approx 6 miles – 2 to 3 hours) to the Sithonia peninsula (known as the second or middle leg). Here we can explore the remote islands off Vourvourou, a picturesque small fishing village where we will settle for the night.

The other option is to possibly circumnavigate Amouliani island and its impressive western coastline, then paddle back to the eastern leg (aprox 1 mile). Here we can pick up our transport, head across to Sithonia peninsula and explore the remote islands off Vourvourou.

Day 4: Porto Koufo

After a short transfer southwards, the paddling will continue the east and most interesting section of coastline on the second leg of Sithonia. Overnight: Hotel at Porto Koufo

Meals Included: Breakfast, Light lunch, Dinner

 Day 5: Agia Kiriaki

Paddling right out of Porto Koufo, we will round the peninsula and head northwest.  Scattered along the way, we will pass through some stunning island groups and finish paddling at the majestic bay of Porto Carras in the Agia Kiriaki area. We will stay at Marmaras and visit one of the local restaurants of the village.

Overnight: Hotel at Marmaras

Day 6: Kelyfos Island, Toroneos Gulf

Day 6 provides us with our second challenge or option of your trip. Again providing the weather conditions are favorable, we have the option to cross to the small uninhabited island of Kelyfos (approx 3 miles –  1.5 hours). After a stretch of our legs and some “re-fueling” we can attempt our second crossing of the “Gulf of Toroneos” to Halikidiki’s first leg known as Kassandria (approx 8 miles – 3 to 4 hours). Our other options are to possibly cross to, and then circumnavigate the island of Kelyfos (aprox 3 miles).  Returning to Marmaras (approx 8 miles –  3 to 4 hours). Or to continue exploring the Agia Kiriaki area and then paddle north to Mamaras. Here we can pick up our transport, head across to Kassandria peninsula where we will spend the night at Pefkohori, one of Halkidiki’s busiest coastal towns with a vibrant nightlife.

 Day 7: Loutra

Our final day of the trip will start from the church of Agios Nikolaos, located right at the seashore with its very own small port, a beautiful setting! Heading south, we will round the tip of first leg with its steep and remote backdrop, secluded beaches and unique limestone formations. Now paddling northwards, our final destination is Loutra and the Chapel of Agia Paraskeui. Our adventure will come to a fitting end with a lovely dinner at Poseidi where we settle for our final night.
