For anyone looking to discover the authentic, wilder side of Crete, this adventure tour is perfect for you. Over the course of 10 days (9 nights), prepare to venture to the most significant Natural Parks and sites that this stunning country has to offer! From hiking across mountain and through nature, to the geo-trails of Samaria, swimming in the sea or relaxing on pristine beaches, and getting to grips with the wonderful Cretan way of life in the mainland of Chania, there’s truly something for everyone, whether you choose to travel as a family, in a group of friends, or with your significant other!

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Heraklion airport. Our partner will meet you, to provide you with the maps and the printed material that we will have prepared for your trip. Moreover, we will have a thorough discussion on your itinerary either at the café of the airport or at the Hotel. A taxi or our partner will drive you to the city center, at your 3-star hotel. After settling into your rooms, you will be able to wander around the old city.

Day 2: Heading towards Sougia. After breakfast, our partner will bring you a car at the hotel. Today, it’s a non-trekking day, since the aim is to reach the starting point of your trekking tour. On the way, you will have the opportunity to visit some very special places. You will pass from Apokoronas area, Chania, Kastanochora, the chestnuts villages. Arrival at Sougia. Settling into your room.

Day 3: 1st TREK, Sougia – Lissos – Sougia. After breakfast, you start your first trek. Sougia – Lissos – Sougia. This is an E4 coastal trek that allows you to observe the signs of the geological evolution of Crete. Belonging to the E4 trek of Crete, is well signed and marked all the way along the path, a fantastic walking trail. 40 min. before your arrival to Sougia, you pass from the famous ancient site of Lissos. Lissos was famous for the Asclepion, where patients from all over the island arrived to be healed from the thermal baths. A walk in the valley of Lissos will impress you, as the area is dispersed with ancient ruins, such as pillars, building bases and pieces of marble. Return to Sougia.
Walking time: 3h30

Day 4: 2nd TREK, Sougia – gorge of Agia Irini – Sougia. You take the bus from Sougia to the Plateau of Omalos. At the entrance of the plateau you go down and you start walking across the beautiful gorge of Agia Irini. Arrival and overnight at Sougia. In case the buses have stopped at that period you will need a transfer (extra cost).
Walking distance: 5 hours (descending).

Day 5: Visit to Elafonisi. Today we start driving westwards to the monastery of Chryssoskalitissa, the Elafonisi Lagoon (a very important protected area for its biodiversity and one of the most emblematic of the island, featured on countless postcards), as well as the beaches of Kedrodasos. Here, dunes of white sand and the ancient cedars cover the vicinity. The main beach is sandy and boasts crystal-clear turquoise waters; along the coastal path from Elafonisi to Kedrodasos are small deserted coves. All of them are exceptional in terms of beauty but also in terms of the interesting geological phenomena that have taken place (over hundreds of years, fault-lines have lifted the ancient coasts more than 8m above sea level). Another visit is in Paleochora and the beautiful little coves around the cosmopolitan village.

Walking time: around 3 hours return

Day 6: 3rd TREK, Climbing to the legendary summit of Samaria – GIGILOS (2080m.). You drive along a wonderful route up to the scenic plateau of Omalos. The plateau is the heart of the protected area of the Samaria National Park. You reach the starting point of Gigilos’ track. The track is stunning, however quite demanding. There is an altitude difference of 730 m (starting-ending point). There is the possibility to divide the trek into two parts and follow just the first one. You continue to the village of Zourva. This night you stay at a house of some villagers. A very nice mountainous house, of good quality.
Hiking distance: 9 km
Hiking Duration: 6-7 Hours

Day 7: 4th TREK, A wonderful trek to the gorge of Tromarisa. Breakfast at the family kafenion. You trek this day at the gorge of Tromarisa. This is a guided tour, accompanied by an experienced guide. Return to the same apartment.
Walking time: 4-5 hours (return)

Day 8: Driving towards the village of Ai Giannis – short treks around. Breakfast at Zourva. You start driving to the area of Sfakia. You arrive at Ai giannis. Settling into the room where you will find your luggage. Possibility to make a short trekking of 2 hours return to a wonderful view point called ‘Balcony’: wonderful view. Return to the apartments and dinner.
Walking distance: from 1 to 3 Hours

Day 9: 5th TREK, On the highest summit of White Mountains of Crete (2452m). You drive to Anopoli and you meet our partner who will transfer you to the beginning of the path to Pachnes, the highest summit of White Mountains (Extra cost to be paid in situ of 130 euros fro the transfer to and back). An amazing trekking in the desert…a wonderful path that resembles to the moon! After finishing the trek, you go back to Anopoli (by transfer) you take your car and you drive back to Ai Giannis. Dinner at the traditional inn.

Walking distance: 4 hours (return).
Altitude difference: 400-500m

Day 10: Return to Heraklion. You start returning to Heraklion, by passing from some wonderful landscapes such as the plateau of Askifou and the Apokoronas are. At Rethimnon city you can make a nice break to enjoy a walk in the alley ways of the historical city and… why not have a nice meal by the sea. Suggestions will be made in the booklet we will give you. You continue to Heraklion. Arrival and settling into the hotel.

Day 11: End of the Trip. Breakfast. You drive to the airport.

Travelling distance: 4 km (1h00).

 Important Tips

  • Travel Bite date and/or time might be modified or cancelled due to weather conditions and in this event the option of an alternative date or full refund will be given.
  • We would recommend to bring with you trekking shoes & spare shoes in case the first pair gets wet, raincoat and a jacket, hat, sun glasses & sunscreen, small towel, spare shirt in case the first one gets wet, trekking poles, swimming costume, a camera, a hat, sunscreen
  • Single occupancy with extra charge 300 euro per person (in case of interest please send email from contact us section or here)
