Tour Overview

Meteora, a World Heritage site is on of the best places to travel to when you visit Greece.

The combination of a unique geological phenomenon and a monastic community that is still active today, with six active monasteries placed on top the immense rocks of Meteora. We will bring you back in time to explore and walk on the footsteps of the monks. We will walk on the secret ancient trails the monks used for centuries in order to learn the history and to discover all the hidden gems of this place.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1 morning: Hiking at Meteora
We are fully committed to Eco-tourism with respect for the environment and the local traditions. During this hiking tour we walk among the gigantic rock pillars of Meteora to enjoy truly breath-taking views. This hiking activity is one of the best ways to enjoy this unique geological phenomenon and to learn the history of an UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the best places to travel to while in Greece. We will walk through hidden trails that only locals know, a journey back in time following the footsteps of the first monks who arrived here more than 15 centuries ago. Experience nature at its best and enjoy great views other visitors will never get to see!
We will begin from the foothills of Doupiani rock, beneath the old ruins of Pantokrator monastery and through the immense rock formations to reach the northern side of Meteora. We will discover the hidden monastery of Ypapanti, the ruins of St. Dimitrious, the monasteries of Great Meteoron or Varlaam and then we will climb down the old footpath the monks used for centuries.
From each place, we pass along the trail we will reveal the stories, the legends and the thousand years of history that are unique to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Difficulty level: Easy level. Previous experience is not required. Basic level of agility and fitness is needed.

Day 1 afternoon: Exploring Meteora’s Caves
This exploration begins from Kastraki square, reaches to Dupiani hermitage and through the ruined Pantokratoros monastery we will arrive at Dupiani’s rock. We will continue towards Ypapanti monastery and St Dimitrious ruins, a monastery destroyed by the Ottomans in 1808 during a local uprising. Following the secret trail that will lead us all the way up to the impressive Great Meteoro and Varlaam Monasteries. For the last part of this exploration we will walk down from Varlaam monastery to St. George the Madilas and see the place where local boys and girls climb with only a rope to dedicate offerings to St George.

Day 2: Hiking of Great Saint
With a height of 630 m (1890 ft) this is the highest of all the Meteora rocks. From old quarters of Kastraki village we will follow the trail leading up to Great Saint. This hiking due to difficulty, is not recommended without a guide, unless you are an experienced climber. Following the trail we will pass by the bizarre-looking rock of Adrachti, walk on the rock-carved steps and encounter the naturally-formed water tanks before reaching to the place where a white cross has been placed. At the end of this trail we will be rewarded with the amazing view.

Important Tips

  • Travel Bite date and/or time might be modified or cancelled due to weather conditions and in this event the option of an alternative date or full refund will be given.
  • We would recommend to bring with you good walking (closed toes) shoes with non-slippery soles, a camera hat, sunscreen
  • The monasteries have a strict dress code men must wear trousers and long sleeves, women must wear a long skirt. If you do turn up in shorts trousers and shirts will be provided.
  • This activity is not recommended for children under 7 years old

The tour as terrific and informative. Both the guide and the bus driver made the tour special! I would recommend it to anyone. A special thanks to Kostas who arranged for my camera to be returned to me. A great organisation!
